🌟 How it works

We’ve broken contributions into five families. Each family has its own badge track, with four tiers of increasing prestige. You earn points from contributions inside a single family – mix and match small and large efforts to climb the ladder.

Contribution Levels & Point Values

Every contribution is reviewed by maintainers and assigned a depth level:

Points are family‑locked – a Frontend PR can’t help you get a Backend badge. But you can earn badges in multiple families at the same time!

Example:
3 Seedling Frontend PRs (3 pts) + 1 Sapling component (3 pts) = 6 pts → you qualify for Frontend Apprentice. Later, a major frontend feature worth 9 Oak pts would bring you to 15 pts → Frontend Artisan.

🔗 Automatic Tracking with the Contributor Dashboard

We’re launching a website (like the GSSOC leaderboard) that integrates directly with your GitHub ID. Here’s how it makes your life easier:

1. Sign up with your GitHub account on the platform.
2. Your contributions – pull requests, issues, discussions, commits – are automatically fetched.
3. For each contribution, you self‑assess the level (Seedling/Sapling/Oak) and submit it for review.
4. Maintainers approve and lock in the points from the dashboard.
5. Your real‑time progress bar shows how close you are to each badge tier.
6. When you cross a threshold, you can claim the badge instantly (while the tier quota lasts), and the SVG is generated right there – ready to embed.

No more manual logs, no more guesswork. The system ensures fairness and transparency.

Overview

In our organization, we should adopt a flexible team structure where teams are defined by functional roles (e.g., DevOps, Frontend, Backend, QA, Security, Data Engineering) rather than by fixed project or product lines.

The core principle: individuals can belong to multiple teams simultaneously.

Why this approach?

Traditional siloed teams (one person = one team) often create bottlenecks, slow down cross-functional work, and limit knowledge sharing. By allowing people to participate in several role-based teams, we:

  • Team leads regularly review workload across teams.
  • Individuals track their primary vs. secondary team commitments.
  • Use a lightweight capacity planning tool or shared calendar.
