Feature: use led matrix as notification area for other programs

Idea: Software like mail clients, instant messanging, softphones, ... display an icon in a new incomming email, message, call, ... Maybe flashing icon to catch attention.
Not sure about implementation, e.g. for email you could just use IMAP credentials, for other software maybe using an existing notification channel as dbus might be easier to implement.
