The reason is that the Codex backend service, in fact, enforces strict validation of its instruction and tool declarations. There is no way to integrate its service with third-party tools such as cline.

There are other existing proxy projects that try to do this, I'm trying. My goal is to use GPT 5 in Claude code, using my tokens from the chatgpt pro plan ($200)

Thanks for letting me know. I got it working by inserting the relevant custom prompt into the user input as a proxy, but this will probably never be as strong as a system message. Anyway, it more or less runs, so this will have to do for now.
