Here's how resolve_artifact works in scripts/collect_module_artifacts.py:73-103:

What it does

It performs transitive dependency resolution of Linux kernel modules. Given a top-level .ko file (e.g., xfs.ko), it finds all runtime dependencies via modinfo -F depends and resolves the complete dependency closure.

Step-by-step flow

1. Inputs

• artifact: a module name like "xfs.ko"
• module_index: a dict[str, Path] mapping every .ko filename to its filesystem path (built by build_module_index via rglob("*.ko"))

2. Resolution algorithm (stack-based DFS)

resolved: list[str] = []    # final list of .ko files to package

Loop:

1. Pop a module name from the stack
2. Skip if already seen (prevents infinite loops from circular deps)
3. Look up the module in the index — if missing, record an error and continue
4. Add the module to resolved
5. Run modinfo -F depends <path> to get comma-separated dependency list
6. Push each dependency onto the stack (reversed to maintain order)
7. Repeat until the stack is empty

3. Dependency parsing (read_dependencies, line 49-70)

• Calls modinfo -F depends <module_path>
• Splits on ,, strips whitespace
• Ensures each dep ends with .ko (modinfo often omits it)
• Returns an empty list if no dependencies

4. How it's used (main, line 158-172)

  → modinfo says no deps

  → pop crc32c.ko, seen={..., crc32c.ko}, resolved=[..., crc32c.ko]
  → modinfo says no deps
Stack: []
Done → artifacts = [xfs.ko, libcrc32c.ko, crc32c.ko]

Edge cases handled

• Missing modules → recorded as errors, top-level artifact is skipped
• Circular dependencies → prevented by seen set
• Duplicates in build tree → warned about, first match wins (line 38-44)
• modinfo failures → caught as RuntimeError, recorded as error
