The json data from doi.org doesn't appear to give markup for italicised words in titles, e.g. ab initio. More concerningly the title entry is often butchered and with spaces missing so the italicised word become ajoined to the adjacent words. It's not clear if this is a general problem or APS specific. See 10.1103/PhysRevB.56.6594 10.1103/PhysRevLett.75.729 10.1103/PhysRevB.46.3798 for examples.
In some cases there does seem to be some markup (10.1103/physrevb.100.245150) although confusingly it is "\n" so inserts newlines. This probably best just stripped out.
