newer compiler?

The compiler is pinned to really old version gcc 9.x. Is there a reason for this? Can we maybe upgrade to a newer release? arm does provide official packages all the way up to gcc 14

For the interesting frameworks, that is "Arduino-Pico", we use the same toolchain as per https://github.com/earlephilhower/pico-quick-toolchain/releases, which already is GCC 14.3 for both ARM and RISC-V toolchains.

For the ArduinoCore-mbed (as supported by the original platform-raspberrypi platform), we use the same compiler that the original platform would use (GCC 9.x). Interestingly, as I just looked it up in the package definition, the Arduino IDE would actually use GCC 7 to build the core, so there even is a slight difference.

For Pico-SDK we use the same compiler as for the ArduinoCore-mbed (GCC 9.x).

I would like if you petitioned at https://github.com/arduino/ArduinoCore-mbed/issues to upgrade the compiler to something newer. Then we can sync it here. I'd like that to be compatible.

You can, at any point in time, tell PlatformIO to use a different compiler for your project. Per documentation you can add to the platformio.ini:

platform_packages =
  platformio/toolchain-gccarmnoneeabi@^1.140201.0

with versions from https://registry.platformio.org/tools/platformio/toolchain-gccarmnoneeabi/versions, above is for GCC 14.2.1.

I have tested that with a framework = picosdk firmware (Blinky on a Pico 2W) and it worked perfectly fine.
