Voicemode connect standby works but no way to initiate voice session from web app on mobile

What I Did:

1. Ran voicemode connect login then voicemode connect standby
2. Mac connected successfully
3. Opened voicemode.dev on phone and signed in with the same account
4. Both devices (Mac and phone) are visible in the dashboard

What Happened:

1. From the web app on my android, the chat window accepts text, but messages do not reach my mac
2. Clicking a device in the Devices tab does nothing
3. STT/TTS settings on android show:

• 127.0.0.1:2022
• 127.0.0.1:8880

Environment

• VoiceMode 8.2.1
• macOS
• Android (Chrome browser)

Am I missing something?

Hey @mbtoffees 👋 Thanks for trying VoiceMode Connect!

Mike and I are literally burning the midnight oil on this right now — he's walking through a park in Melbourne with headphones testing this same flow with me. Tomorrow (Feb 24) is Claude Code's first birthday so we're trying to get this polished up.

Good news: both devices showing in the dashboard means the gateway connection is solid. The issues you're hitting:

1. Message delivery (web → Mac)
The released version's connect standby doesn't have full message routing wired up yet. We just pushed the vm-774 branch which has a completely reworked notification pipeline using Claude Code hooks. If you want to help test the latest:

git checkout vm-774
pip install -e .

2. STT/TTS settings showing localhost
Those 127.0.0.1 addresses are the defaults for local Whisper/Kokoro services — they won't work from your phone since they're only reachable on your Mac. You have two options:

• Tailscale (recommended): If you have Tailscale set up, expose your voice services on your tailnet (not public internet, just your own devices):

  voicemode serve --host 0.0.0.0 --allow-tailscale

  Then configure your Android to point at your Mac's Tailscale IP. See Remote Access docs for details.

• OpenAI API: Point STT/TTS at OpenAI's endpoints using an API key — works immediately, though audio goes via cloud.

The flow is actually a bit different, we have redesigned it tonight.

Instead of running VoiceMode connect standby. The agent calls a local MCP tool that will lazy load the socket connection to VoiceMode.dev

It's a working progress and the documentation will be written last, but I'm sure you and Claude can figure it out

OK, 1AM and Cora insists I go to bed. "We've done a lot. Get some rest and we can tidy up the PR for the soft launch in the morning".

8 hours rest only leaves 16 hours to work but there is always tomorrow. ;-)

We got the flow working:

Having the same experience here. Setup:

• OS: Windows 11 + WSL2 (Ubuntu)
• MCP server: voicemode-dev via npx mcp-remote in .mcp.json — connects successfully
• Web app: app.voicemode.dev tested on Chrome, Edge (desktop), and mobile browser

The MCP status tool shows devices as connected with "TTS" capability, and converse reports messages as "delivered and spoken" — but:

1. No audio plays on any device (desktop or mobile)
2. Mic button stays grayed out — STT never activates
3. Messages arrive and display as text, just no audio

Looks like the same underlying issue — the web app connects to the gateway but audio routing isn't fully wired up yet. Happy to help test when there's an update.

@ai-cora and I have VoiceMode Connect as number 1 priority for the weekend. Would love testers for the web receiver (it's looking lovely on ioS Safari ATM) and also the iOS app. Let me know if you want to try the iOS app on TestFlight.

Updated: I wasn't going to do any work on this tonight due to exhaustion and other duties - but you got me thinking about it and on the drive home Cora and I talked through some design changes.

I love how she generates nice HTML that I can view on my phone or iPad while we're talking. We we're planning some updates to mbailey/show-me skill to share this workflow.

Cora (Claude Code + VoiceMode + context) supplies the jet fuel.
