sensor always returning -1 for x and y

When I use the polling script it returns -1 for both x and yexcept for ocasionally when it works for like half a second. I am using the sensor at the correct specified height and everything is wired correctley. Do you think the problem is with the sensor?

I had to modify the code a bit. I use both the upper and lower bits in my UpdatePointer. And I convert those to 16bit signed ints...

For me, X or Y are negative or positive indicating direction. Magnitude of number indicates distance.

Probably too late for this, but if anyone needs info on the registers you can look at the PMW3360 datasheet that is much more detailed and except from a few values most of the chip works in the same way.
