What is the bug or the crash? What were your expectations and what actually happened?
iOS: Stylus tap does not directly add vertices when "Allow finger tap on canvas to add vertices" is enabled
Describe the issue
I am a long-time QField user and use it professionally for ecological field surveys.
I recently started using QField on an iPhone because of its excellent performance compared to my Android tablet.
Everything works very well except polygon digitizing with a stylus.
Environment
- Device: iPhone 17 Pro Max
- iOS: XX.X
- QField: 4.2.4 "Coral Sea"
- Stylus: Mobilis Universal Active Stylus
Settings
The following option is enabled:
Settings → Digitizing & Editing → Allow finger tap on canvas to add vertices
Steps to reproduce
- Open a project.
- Start editing a polygon layer.
- Create a new polygon.
- Tap on the map with the stylus.
Current behaviour
When I tap the map with the stylus:
- the digitizing crosshair moves to the tapped location;
- no vertex is created;
- I must press the "+" button to validate each vertex.
Therefore each vertex requires two actions:
- tap the map;
- press "+".
Expected behaviour
With "Allow finger tap on canvas to add vertices" enabled, I would expect a stylus tap to immediately create a vertex.
I understand that iPhones do not support stylus hover like some Android devices, so I do not expect the crosshair to follow the stylus before touching the screen.
However, I would expect the stylus contact itself to:
- move the cursor to the touched location;
- immediately add the vertex.
Comparison with Android
Using the same QField project on an Android tablet:
- tapping with the stylus immediately creates a new vertex;
- pressing "+" is not required.
This makes polygon digitizing significantly faster in the field.
Additional question
Is the current behaviour on iOS:
- the intended behaviour,
- an iOS limitation,
- or a bug?
If it is intentional, would it be possible for stylus taps (or touch taps when the option is enabled) to directly create vertices on iOS as well?
Thank you very much for your work on QField. It is an outstanding application and it performs extremely well on recent iPhones.
