Accept non-critical characters as input

When converting from bytes, it can be beneficial to support characters found in UUIDs like - or others.

In other words, I want 1264c4c3-722f-4a06-a4da-785c539bff1a to be accepted internally as 1264c4c3722f4a06a4da785c539bff1a, and so on.

This would need to be conveyed somehow to the user that it found miscellaneous characters, and is proceeding anyway.
