Minor cleanup, use ::error:: before throwing exit code 1

• Use ::error:: in echo statements right before exit 1, to make them more visible in GitHub Action logs.
• Some whitespace fixes.
• Use all available cores when building GAP, to hopefully speed it up a bit.
• Change actions/checkout version in README to v6
